Barton-under-Needwood’s very own gold rush

Olympic fever may be gripping the nation, but for Barton-under-Needwood the Gold medals have been flocking in a little early.

Holland Tug of War Club, based in the village and sponsored by Packington Free Range has recently taken five… yes, five, gold medals in the Tug of War Federation of Great Britain’s National Inter Counties Championships, representing Staffordshire.

The competition was held in Norfolk, with seven weight class categories ranging from lightweight to through to heavyweight. The ‘Barton’ team who train at the Holland Sports Club entered teams in all seven classes. Despite some really heavy clashes with teams from Leicestershire, Essex and Cambridgeshire, the team went through to win five of the seven competitions for Staffordshire, also picking up a Silver and a Bronze in the other two.

The titles claimed were: 640 kilos, 720 kilos, Catchweight (heavyweight unlimited class) and the two 4+4 classes (where teams consist of 4 men and 4 women): the 600 kilos 4+4 and the 660 kilos 4+4. Holland also took Silver in the 600 kilos (lightweight) and Bronze in the 680 kilos (light heavyweight).

We are so proud of the team – what a fabulous achievement.
