I was very disappointed with my recent purchase of whole chicken. There was a significant amount of excess water whilst cooking, which immediately raised concerns for me. It’s widely known that some supermarket chickens are injected with water to increase weight — and while this may be legal, it’s exactly why I avoid buying chicken from supermarkets in the first place.
I usually buy from Packington Free Range because I trust their quality, and I’ve always found their products to be honest in terms of weight and overall standard. That’s why it was especially disappointing when my second purchase of their whole chicken contained so much excess water. It simply didn’t meet the level of quality I’ve come to expect.
I hope this was just a one-off issue, as I’ve previously had positive experiences. However, this time I was not impressed at all.
Thank you for your review, and I’m genuinely sorry to hear you were disappointed with your recent chicken - particularly as you’ve supported us before and trusted our standards.
I’d like to reassure you that we never add water to our birds. All of our chickens are reared in the same way, on the same farm, to the same high welfare standards.
That said, natural variation does occur. Unlike factory-standardised products, no two birds are identical. Factors such as activity levels, feed intake in the final days, muscle development and fat cover can all influence how a chicken behaves in the oven. A bird with slightly less fat and more natural moisture in the muscle may release more liquid during cooking.
More liquid doesn’t indicate added water or lower quality - it simply reflects the natural characteristics of that individual bird.
Chicken is just lovely, firm flesh, bones do not fracture as soon as you cut into your leg or wing. The texture and flavour is second to none. It makes seem expensive but it isn’t as because it’s so fresh and good quality, it goes further. I get six full meals then make vegetable and pasta soup from the carcass and left over meat for six.so that’s at least twelve fulfilling meals. Really super chicken!
What a fabulous juicy tasty chicken, yes they cost a little more but the texture and flavour are worth every penny
The smell as it's cooking is enough to let you know how much better this is, and the first taste is even more special. Chicken this good is very special.
I've been wanting to try free range chicken for some time and wasn't disappointed. It may cost a bit more but the taste and texture is totally different, well worth a try.
